Zunächst erfolgt eine Untersuchung der Grundlagen, die Kohlberg für sein Stufenmodell verwendet hat. Er stützte sich u. a. auf Arbeiten von Piaget, Dewey aber auch auf Kants Theorien. Insbesondere werden die Beobachtungen und daraus resultierenden Ergebnisse bezüglich der moralischen Urteile bei Kindern von Piaget detaillierter analysiert. Bei der Beschreibung des Stufenmodells wird auf die bekannteste Version von 1969 eingegangen. Spätere Ergänzungen und Änderungen, wie das Einführen der Stufe 0 und die spätere Reduzierung auf 5 Stufen werden nicht aufgezeigt. Kohlberg verwendete zahlreiche moralische Dilemmata für sein Verfahren. Diese werden bezüglich ihres Aufbaus und den Unterschied zu realen Problemen näher beleuchtet. Zur Messung der Fähigkeit des moralischen Urteilens haben Kohlberg und seine Mitarbeiter unterschiedliche Messmethoden genutzt. Bei zwei Messmethoden wird auf die Arbeitsweise und Qualität hinsichtlich zuverlässiger Ergebnisse näher eingegangen. Zahlreiche Kritiker beurteilen das Stufenmodell der moralischen Entwicklung von Kohlberg als unzureichend und nicht anwendbar. Ihre Aussagen werden im letzten Abschnitt dieser Hausarbeit vorgestellt. Drei der größten Kritikpunkte, die Regression, der kulturelle Einfluss auf die moralische Urteilsfähigkeit und die Geschlechtsunterschiede beim moralischen Urteilen stehen dabei im Mittelpunkt der Betrachtung.
